Trolls are prevalent in Icelandic folklore. Throughout Iceland, one can see pillars of stone, said to be trolls that turned to stone because they did not make it to shelter before sunrise. The pillars are scattered about individually, troll couples in love separated by the sun forever, or even entire troll families. Older folklore most often portrays the trolls as malicious and irritable sheep stealers who eat misbehaving children. These days, the trolls are generally considered shy and quiet creatures that live in harmony with nature.
The artist, Brian Pilkington, is well known for his drawings and his wonderful book illustrations. He has written and illustrated a wide range of children’s literature, and his works depicting Icelandic folklore and trolls have attracted deserved recognition.
